Naeem Juwan and Alex ’XXXchange’ Epton are Spank Rock, two misfit pals from Baltimore who are re-inventing hip hop as we know it, “…bring(ing) the joy, freshness and plain weirdness back to hip hop.” (NME)
Drawing on the musical influences from their hometown Baltimore, Spank Rock make something genuinely unlike anything you’ve heard before. Of course there are comparisons – Missy Elliot, The Beastie Boys, Dizzee Rascal and Diplo all spring to mind, but Spank Rock demand to be approached on their own terms. Their debut album ‘YoYoYoYoYoYo’ sees producer, Alex Epton aka Armani ’XXXchange’ hook up sparse, supple rhythms with an esoteric mix of dance music, punk rock and electro with super-catchy electronic lines and the odd inspired lump of sample, while Naeem splurges his booty-obsessed lyrics, swearing is deployed liberally and is both big and funny.
On the Australian tour bus Spank Rock will be bringing their ‘4 piece live show’ partners in crime.
