Shy Child
Shy Child is the collaboration of Nate Smith and Pete Cafarella, former band members of Dischord’s El Guapo. Nate plays drums, while Pete sing and plays the ‘keytar’ or ‘guiboard’. Shy Child are not sure exactly what genre label applies to them, since their main aim is to fuse Jamaican dancehall and Timbaland beat quirks with punk energy and overdriven analogue joy. They are certainly perplexed at the ‘new rave’ tag which has occasionally been applied. “We’re American, so we never had ‘old rave’” explains Pete. “A rave to an American is like a college frat party, it has bad connotations. But if by ‘rave’ you mean people cutting loose and having a good time, that definitely suits us.”
Part dancehall, part electro, part R’n'B, and with a smattering of punk attitude, some have suggested that Shy Child are to Kraftwerk what The White Stripes are to Led Zeppelin.
Shy Child are the sound of circuits shorting, neon lights fuzzing, they are the glitch in the system, static buzzing and the noise that won’t stop.
Though their latest offering Noise Won’t Stop isn’t just a relentless tidal wave of sonic floor-shredders, Shy Child bring the party!
The album was produced by Chris Zane, with tracks co-produced by Paul Epworth and a guest appearance from Spank Rock.
They’ve toured with Hot Chip, Chemical Brothers, CSS, Muse, Soulwax and Klaxons.
Expect their live shows to send you into an orbit.
