Blockhead

Blockhead + Signify

Tony Simon aka Blockhead debuted on Ninja Tune in 2004 with the critically-acclaimed and JJJ supported Music By Cavelight. It was described as "one of the most fantastically good albums you’re going to hear this year" (Sunday Telegraph) and "a beautiful record" (Metro), with Blockhead himself tipped as "definitely one to watch" (Touch).

Blockhead grew up in downtown New York City. The son of an artist, early on he found his passion was for music. A fan of a whole range of sounds, especially hip-hop, Blockhead steadily built a tremendous collection of tapes and later CDs from innumerable artists. After a brief stint as a rapper, he realized his calling was behind the boards and not on the mic, and from there he began to produce beats.

Both his Music By Cavelight and Downtown Science albums on Ninja Tune have hit a huge chord in Australia, making Blockhead a Ninja priority for this region. RRR, FBi, 4ZZZ and RTR all got right behind the record as did street press in all major states. Blockhead also increased his profile by producing nine tracks on Aesop Rock’s critically acclaimed album ‘Labor Days’, and has also worked with other indie giants such as Slug of Atmosphere, Murs, Mike Ladd and SA Smash,

together with a huge amount of work for the uber cool Definitive Jux label + remixes on Big Dada. He has also recently contributed three tracks (including the first single) for Cage’s new album on Def Jux. The other producers on the project are DJ Shadow, El-P and RJD2.

DJ Signify is a major new talent and an integgral part of Blockhead’s live show - a producer in the vein of DJ Shadow and working at the heart of the US turntablist scene. Along with Mr.Dibbs, Buck65 and Egon he’s at the core of the 1200Hobos DJ crew and he’s recently provided all the turntable work on Steinski’s official Sugar Hill Records Mixtape (Antidote) and is working with Wild Style legend Grandmaster Caz on his new record.
